Denver's Green Fleet Receives National Recognition
The Public Works Fleet Maintenance Division has been selected 9th in North America for the
first ever Government Green Fleet award! The award recognized Denver's Fleet Division as
"one of the leading thinkers in America on how to break our foreign oil dependency". The
group recognized our agency's efforts at saving money through fuel locks and fuel
conservation efforts.
Fleet Maintenance is proud of the contributions it has made toward making the City fleet
"greener". In 2001, the agency bought a fleet of 39 Toyota Prius hybrid-electric vehicles.
At that time, Denver's hybrid fleet was thought to be the largest municipal hybrid fleet
in the world. In 2005, the agency secured three hybrid Ford Escapes, which were among the
first hybrid-electric SUVs in Colorado.

Most recently, in 2008, the Denver Fleet Maintenance Division secured a hybrid-hydraulic
trash truck. The Peterbilt Hybrid Model 320 model utilizes Eaton Corporation's hydraulic
launch assist technology, which is ideally suited for stop-and-go trash collection operations.
Hydraulics help launch and slow the unit, so less diesel fuel is consumed and emissions are
reduced. Denver has realized a 25% increase in fuel economy with the hybrid-hydraulic trash
truck compared to the City's non-hybrid units.
Denver is also a big user of alternative fuels. The City and County of Denver started
using biodiesel in 2004 and now fuels its entire fleet of diesel engine vehicles with
biodiesel. The City expects to use more than 1.1 million gallons of biodisel in 2008.
Denver also utilizes propane and E85. Denver's use of these alternative fuels reduces
its dependency on foreign oil.
The Denver Fleet Maintenance Division works closely with Greenprint Denver to meet the
City's goals for utilizing alternative fuels and reducing emissions.
