One of the Seven Essential Popular Business Books.” That’s how Today’s Librarian magazine described Barry Maher’s “leadership classic” that inspired this session. Filling the Glass is the antidote to presentations that are entertaining but full of “let’s all think happy thoughts and everything will be wonderful” fluff. It’s chock full of nuts and bolts content to help improve the leadership skills of any government fleet manager, from the most cynical veteran to the most starry-eyed (or the most discouraged) novice. Yet it’s real-world motivational, even inspirational.

This session focus on the ways that we "Make Safety a Priority" - this is done by developing and updating an "Annual Strategic Safety Plan", setting realistic goals and creating "vision" for all employees to understand where we are going as an organization. Your organization must develop a monthly training program and the most important component of your program is to track monthly, quarterly and annual progress. Training should include weekly "shop talks" and most certainly using your own "incidents" on the floor as training tools. Finally, every organization should have an Employee Safety Committee that meets monthly and one should find ways to reward good behavior. Remember the ultimate goal is not to save money, but to save lives and send every employee home with all the pieces and parts he/she came to work with, in tact and in one piece.
