Kevin has 40 years experience in Fleet.  He graduated from Alexandria Technical College with a degree in diesel mechanics. He began working in the private sector for contractors and heavy equipment dealerships as a technician and manager. He holds 3 professional fleet certifications, APWA Certified Public Fleet Professional, NAFA Certified Public Fleet Manager and AEMP Certified Equipment Manager. In 1990 he was hired by Dakota County Minnesota as Fleet Manager of their Transportation Fleet. In 2007 when the county consolidated 16 departments, including law enforcement, to create the Fleet Management Department, Kevin Schlangen, then managing the transportation fleet, took over, overseeing the creation of county-wide fleet programs, operational procedures, and reporting. During his time at Dakota County, the fleet operation has received many local and national awards, including the NAFA FLEXY, AEMP Fleeetmaster, 100 Best Fleets, NACo, Freshwater Society, and Leading Fleets from Government Fleet magazine. Schlangen has written articles for numerous trade magazines and has been a speaker at various local and national events, including GFX, NAFA I&E, APWA Snow Conference, APWA PWX, and CONGEXPO-CON/AGG. He was named APWA’s Professional Manager of the Year in public fleet in 2011.

Additionally, Schlangen has developed community engagement and outreach programs to demonstrate the value of fleet management and to encourage a new generation to develop a career in fleet management.
